Rigid Heddle Weaving - Newsboy Cap

Newsboy Cap

I loved this cap when I saw it. It's offered as a free, downloadable pattern on Waffle Patterns. Although my sewing skills are pretty basic, the cap was surprisingly easy to make. I made the smaller size and found it a perfect fit.

As for the fabric, I wanted a small check or plaid for this project. I played around with colors and designs on the free online plaid maker at PlaidMaker.  What a fun and addictive program! I found myself lost in a world of plaids. I ended up choosing a warping pattern of 4 dark gray, 4 light gray, and 2 red. This was repeated across the warp. The weft was a mirror image - 4 picks dark gray, 4 light gray, and 2 red, repeated throughout the weft.

Project details:

I used remnants of worsted weight wool yarn from my stash to weave this fabric.
Size 7.5 heddle
Warp length 65”
Warp width 19”
Weaving length 52”

Before cutting, I back my fabric with ShapeFlex, a lightweight fusible (JoAnn Fabrics.)  This stabilizes the woven fabric so that you can cut and sew without worry of raveling.

  1. Glad to see your recent postings. Very much enjoyed your earlier entries and got lots of inspiration from your projects and travels to LYS's. I'm "knitting2gether" couldn't figure how to add name.
